About

Welcome to Historic Gaming Pieces.

The aim of this database is to allow easy access to the information on gaming pieces from the Early Medieval period (5th-12th centuries) in England. The research presented here was started during my Masters dissertation which was titled: Analysing Temporal and Geographical Patterns in Early Medieval Gaming Pieces in the British Isles. I have continued to gather data in my current role as an Assistant Finds Specialist at Cotswold Archaeology.

For my Masters I adapted existing Gaming Piece typologies to suit the gaming pieces found from across Britain. To see this typology in full just head over to the Typology page.

I also created maps to show any geographic patterns in form, material and location over the coarse of the Early Medieval period. I hope to keep these updated with any new finds and will post them here shortly.

Whether you are passing quickly with interest or looking to develop your own research I hope the information here in this website will help aid you. Please remember to reference accordingly.
